Why do some icons appear in colour and others do not?
Characters that predate emoji, such as โ and โ , were designed as text and normally render monochrome. Some platforms upgrade a few of them to colour emoji anyway, which is why โ often appears yellow on a phone but black on a desktop. Appending the variation selector U+FE0E requests the text form and U+FE0F requests the emoji form, though not every platform honours the request.
Are these better than emoji for interface work?
Usually yes. They inherit the text colour, so they follow a dark theme automatically, and they keep their weight next to surrounding letters instead of sitting as a coloured sticker. Emoji are better when you want the picture itself to draw attention.
Do icon characters hurt accessibility?
Only when they carry meaning that appears nowhere else. A screen reader announces โ as "warning sign", which is helpful, but a line consisting of five decorative icons becomes five announcements of nothing useful. Keep icons alongside words rather than instead of them, and never encode critical information in an icon alone.
