How to use music symbols

Support varies more in this set than almost anywhere else, so start with the safe glyphs. The most universal note glyphs are โ™ช (single eighth) and โ™ฌ (beamed pair) - they render reliably across every platform. Use them around song titles in playlist captions (โ™ช now playing: song name โ™ช) or after lyrics in social posts. Clefs ๐„ž ๐„ข work in modern fonts on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows 10+; older systems may show boxes - when in doubt, fall back to โ™ฉ โ™ช โ™ซ. The sharp โ™ฏ and flat โ™ญ are also useful in non-musical contexts: Cโ™ฏ as a programming language, Bโ™ญ as a key signature in a song title.

Playlist and song titles

Wrap song names in note symbols - โ™ช Blinding Lights โ™ช - or use them as bullet points in a playlist list. Works in Spotify descriptions, YouTube titles, Apple Music playlists.

Lyric posts and quotes

Mark quoted lyrics with โ™ซ at the start and end. Helps readers distinguish lyrics from the surrounding caption text.

Music-related bios

Compose an aesthetic music bio - โ™ช vinyl & cassettes / โ™ซ lo-fi producer. Pair with related dividers for full effect.

Genre and key labels

Use โ™ฏ and โ™ญ in song key labels - "in Fโ™ฏ minor" or "key: Bb (โ™ญ)". Common in producer bios and song descriptions.

Concert and event posts

Add ๐ŸŽค or ๐ŸŽธ next to event details - ๐ŸŽธ live at the venue, Friday 9pm - for instant visual grouping.

Compatibility notes

Most symbols here work everywhere, but rare or decorative characters may not render on older devices and apps with limited fonts. Test a symbol on mobile before using it in a permanent username.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the treble clef ๐„ž show as a box?
The musical-symbols Unicode block (U+1D100โ€“U+1D1FF) is outside the Basic Multilingual Plane and requires fonts that explicitly include musical glyphs. Most modern systems support it (iOS 13+, recent Android, Windows 10+ with Segoe UI Symbol). Older devices fall back to a missing-glyph box. The fallback is to use โ™ฉ โ™ช โ™ซ instead, which are in the BMP and supported everywhere.
How do I type a sharp โ™ฏ that isn't autocorrected to hashtag #?
Many keyboards autocorrect โ™ฏ to # because # is far more common. To preserve โ™ฏ, paste from this page or use your system's emoji/symbol picker. On macOS, also accessible via the Character Viewer (Ctrl+Cmd+Space). The two characters look similar but have different Unicode code points - โ™ฏ is U+266F (Music Sharp Sign), # is U+0023 (Number Sign).
Are there guitar tab symbols in Unicode?
Unicode doesn't have dedicated guitar tablature glyphs. Tabs are conventionally written using ASCII numbers and dashes (e.g., 'e|--3--2--0--'), with the music staff drawn using the pipe character |. For tablature in social media posts, plain ASCII remains the standard.
